Henry Alken (1785-1851), "Cock Fighting" Plates I & II, hand-colored engravings, engraved by I.
Clark, published by T. McLean, London, 1820. Full margins, excellent early impressions, and acid free paper has been inserted between engraving and board backing.
• Issued during Britain's Regency era, when cockfighting was both a social pastime and a controversial blood sport.
• McLean's 1820 edition captured the transition from Georgian sporting prints to early Victorian realism.
• Today, these are prized as original period impressions, not later restrikes, distinguished by the sharpness of the engraving and the date line ("London, Published by T. McLean, Jan'y 1, 1820").
