Offered is a four stack bookcase in mission oak. It was manufactured by the C. J. Lundstrom Manufacturing Company. The patent number on the label indicates it was manufactured post 1914.
The C.J. Lundstrom Manufacturing Company, was founded in 1899 in Little Falls, New York, and became a major manufacturer of sectional barrister bookcases, receiving a key patent in 1902 for their design. Lundstrom's bookcases were characterized by their modular, stackable design with sliding glass doors. They were the “IKEA” of their day having come up with barrister bookcases that would not only stack but would come apart and fold flat for shipping purposes. Assembly instructions were provided with the bookcases. Since they sold and shipped directly to consumers this made as much sense then as it does today.
Each of the four cases have an interior dimension of 32” in width, and 9” in depth. They differ in that the two cases pictured on the top of the stack have an internal height of 9.5” while the lower two are slightly higher measuring 11.5”. The glass in the doors when viewed from the side show a slight wavyness typical of antique glass indicating that it is most likely original.
As with any preowned piece of antique or vintage furniture the piece does show signs of use commensurate with its age. There was an area on the bottle side of one case where wood had been chipped out and it has been repaired. These are shown in the pictures. Please look carefully at the pictures as they make up an important part of the description. Questions are always welcome.
