19th Century Patinated Terracotta Group of Putti Playing at the Fountain, Allegory of Water
What if you could relive the joy and innocence of childhood with this terracotta allegory?
Created in the 19th century, this terracotta group was crafted in a neo-Baroque and late Rococo style. It figuratively evokes play: three innocent children resembling cherubs (putti) playing while washing, around a vase pouring water abundantly, evoking a fountain or spring.
A gentle allegory to evoke water and its benefits (cleansing, hydration, and play), this group is a true ode to the feats of human engineering regarding man's most vital resource: water. Without it, nothing lives, nothing grows. Our skin needs it to cleanse itself of everyday impurities and dirt.
Throughout human history, water has been a difficult resource to manage, contain, and use. This allegory perfectly expresses humanity's ability to master this vital and difficult-to-maintain resource, particularly in the 19th century: to be able to wash and play with it, which was a great luxury at the time, but above all, a possibility. The children represent Humanity, of whom we are the children of Nature, and whose resources we use.
