This 12-inch carved bone figure originates from the Columbia River region and has been dated to the 19th or early 20th century, as indicated by the deep patination and coloration of the bone. Finely incised with geometric motifs, the figure wears a tall headdress and patterned skirt—design elements echoing ancient forms from the Pacific Northwest’s early cultures. Intricately detailed and richly aged, this piece embodies both cultural continuity and historic craftsmanship.
The Pacific Northwest and Columbia River region—encompassing parts of present-day Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia—was home to diverse and sophisticated Indigenous cultures long before European contact. Major tribal groups included the Chinook, Wasco, Wishram, Yakama, and others who lived along the Columbia River, which served as a vital trade artery linking coastal and inland peoples.
The river sustained thriving communities through its abundant salmon runs and fertile valleys, fostering a rich material culture. Art from this region often blended functionality and spirituality—seen in carved bone, antler, and wood figures, as well as tools, masks, and ritual objects. These carvings commonly depicted humans, animals, and mythic beings, symbolizing clan lineage, spiritual power, or ancestral presence.
Distinctive traits of Columbia River art include geometric incising, stylized forms, and rhythmic patterning—often mirroring natural cycles and the interconnectedness of life. Many figures, such as your carving, echo themes of transformation and status, possibly representing important individuals, shamans, or deities. Together, these works stand as enduring expressions of identity, belief, and continuity across centuries.
A similar, more ancient standing figure is currently on view in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, underscoring the enduring artistic traditions of this region: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/717580
