A rare opportunity to own a pair of traditionally rebuild chairs from the 1800s that are absolutely gorgeous and likely the most comfortable chairs you will ever sit in. Exceptional matching pair of Louis XV–style walnut fauteuil armchairs restored using authentic period technique and materials.
Classic French elegance, with updated textile keeps the look crisp and current. Each chair was taken back to the walnut frame and carefully restored using time-honored methods and natural materials: webbing base; coil springs hand-stitched into place and hand-tied with natural fiber Italian twine; layered in burlap and horsehair; and more burlap then hand stitched and shaped to form the seat profile; another layer of burlap is foundation for coir and cotton batting, contained in natural muslin. The edges of the chair backs shaped with stuffed with wool; coir center padding, finished with cotton batting and sealed in muslin.
The upholstery is finished with a high-quality cotton jacquard— woven damask/floral scroll overlaid with tailored ivory, taupe, black and white stripes. Completed with vintage-style upholstery tacks/nailhead trim for a crisp, classic finish.

Original wood finish and patina were preserved while any structural issues were repaired and stabilized. During the tear down process, a union label was found with it’s most recent upholstery layer; a much older green reversible damask/jacquard textile was uncovered beneath that; an evocative glimpse into the chairs’ long history. The chairs are newly upholstered in a tailored stripe cotton jacquard (subtle woven damask/floral scroll) with stripes of taupe, ivory, black and white, finished with vintage-style nailhead/tack trim. Price reflects 100+ hours of documented, traditional frame-up restoration using natural materials (webbing, hand-stitched springs, Italian twine tie, horsehair/coir/wool/cotton builds) and vintage-style tacks. Minor, age-appropriate character may remain consistent with antique/vintage frames; overall presentation is excellent and ready for daily use. less
