This sculptural hand-turned burlwood vessel is a stunning example of American studio woodcraft—sourced from a private collection in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a region celebrated for its fusion of art, nature, and craftsmanship. The vessel’s voluptuous silhouette and warm honey finish evoke both modern simplicity and timeless organic form.
Expertly crafted from richly grained burlwood, the piece features swirling natural patterns that shimmer in the light, highlighting the tree’s original character and natural imperfections. The interior and exterior are finely polished to a satiny sheen that enhances its depth and warmth.
On the underside, the vessel is signed “DH 23” in red, an artist’s mark that suggests it was made by a skilled mid-century or contemporary woodturner working in the Santa Fe region—possibly part of the 1970s–1990s Southwestern studio craft movement, known for blending traditional materials with modern sculptural design.
Provenance
Sourced directly in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from a collector of artisan-made Southwestern pieces. Likely the work of a regional craftsman trained in the post-war American woodturning revival, which emphasized individuality, organic form, and respect for the raw material.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition. Very minor natural inclusions and nicks consistent with burlwood. Structurally sound and smooth to the touch, with a subtle sheen that highlights its hand-turned craftsmanship.
Styling Ideas
Display as a centerpiece on a dining or console table, or style it alongside ceramics, stone, and brass for a refined organic-modern look. Works beautifully in Japandi, wabi-sabi, desert modern, or rustic-luxe interiors. Its sculptural form allows it to stand alone as a piece of art or complement a curated grouping of natural materials.
