A rare and beautifully preserved pair of mid-century modern armchairs crafted in West Germany circa 1955–1965.
Stamped “Made in Western Germany,” these pieces capture the refined yet organic aesthetic of Europe’s postwar design renaissance where German engineering met Scandinavian simplicity.
Design & Provenance
During the 1950s–60s, West German furniture makers such as Thonet, Pagholz Flötotto, and other small ateliers produced exceptional bentwood forms for export to the U.S. and Northern Europe.
These chairs feature:
• Elegant sculpted bentwood arms and legs
• Graceful horizontal slatted backs
• The original warm walnut-tone finish
• Original textured upholstery, clean and well-kept
• Solid, comfortable construction and excellent balance
Their understated sophistication reflects the modernist ideals of the Wirtschaftswunder (“Economic Miracle”) period, when West German design was defined by functionality, craftsmanship, and timeless style.
Condition
Very good vintage condition with light, expected wear for age. Frames are solid and stable; upholstery remains clean and usable. Original patina throughout consistent with careful, decades-long preservation.
Why We Love Them
Authentic, understated, and rare to find as a matching pair, these chairs anchor any modern interior from a collector’s living space to a designer’s studio or gallery setting.
