Rare Antique German White Glazed Faux Bois 5-Piece Modular Vase & Candle Centerpiece, circa 1890–1920
Antique German Faux Bois 5-Piece Vase/ Candle Centerpiece in White
A remarkable and highly versatile five-piece porcelain Faux Bois centerpiece set, stamped Made in Germany, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Masterfully modeled to imitate the irregular texture, knots, and grain of natural wood branches, each element is finished in a luminous white glaze that elevates rustic woodland motifs into refined table art.
The set comprises:
Two straight fence sections with three vase openings each (7" W × 1" D × 3" H)
Two V-shaped fence sections with three vase openings each (5.5" W × 3" H × 3.5" D)
One central “tree trunk” form with four staggered vase openings (5.75" H × 3" × 3")
As arranged, the set measures approximately 19" W × 5.5" H × 7.5" D, yet its modular construction offers numerous configurations—linear for a mantel, semicircular for a dining table, or fully encircling a floral or candle arrangement for dramatic centerpieces.
Historical Context: Faux Bois ceramics—French for “false wood”—became fashionable during the mid-to-late 19th century as part of the Victorian naturalist movement, which celebrated botanical and rustic forms in both garden and interior decoration. In Germany, porcelain factories in Thuringia and Bavaria produced high-quality versions for export, often commissioned by upscale European and American retailers. Most surviving examples today are single vases; complete multi-piece modular sets are exceptionally rare. The Made in Germany stamp, required for export after 1891 under the McKinley Tariff Act, further confirms its intended market reach.
Rarity & Appeal: Beyond its scarcity, this set’s pristine white glaze makes it unusually adaptable—harmonizing with both traditional and modern interiors. Whether used for flowers, greenery, or as a candle holder—with candles trimmed or tapered to fit the openings—it offers an ever-changing decorative focal point.
Condition: Excellent antique condition with minor wear to the bases consistent with age; no significant chips or repairs noted.
