Window panels made of wood, often have geometric fretwork or lattice patterns, are important components of architectural artifacts in China. Each province, or provinces within a region, have distinctive individual styles. The carving styles from Yunnan emphasize bold floral reliefs and geometric lattice patterns.
Yunnan Province, nicknamed "the Kingdom of Flowers", has favorable conditions for plants, especially flowers and flowering trees. It is only natural that the area's window panels are decorated with floral motifs. The carving styles from Yunnan emphasize bold floral reliefs and geometric lattice patterns.
This panel is a continuous design of four variations of the dogwood flower, joined together by a series of wood joints, some appear to be mortise and tenons and some unknown. Each flower appears to be carved in segments and joined together. It appears to be tremendous amount of carving, all done by hand. The original finish has worn off. The wood has aged to gray and it has a good antique appearance.
