This antique botanical illustration, titled Paxillus (Taf. 28), showcases six distinctive species of the Paxillus genus: Paxillus rhodoxanthus, involutus, panuoides, atrotomentosus, tricholoma, and helomorphus. Rendered with fine precision and scientific clarity, each mushroom is shown from multiple angles to highlight gill structure, cap texture, and spore morphology. The warm, earthy palette—ranging from deep browns to golden yellows—is enhanced by meticulous hand-coloring, a hallmark of 19th-century naturalist printing.
As part of a larger mycological series, this plate exemplifies the blend of scientific taxonomy and artistic craftsmanship characteristic of the period.

About the Artist
Carl Gustav Jablonsky (1756 – 25 May 1787) was a Berlin naturalist, entomologist and illustrator. He was also the private secretary to the Queen of Prussia, Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern. He died at the age of 31. He willed his works to his colleague, Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Herbst, who became a naturalist and entomologist.
