English Pearlware Mocha Pottery Jug with Cat's Eye Design,
Staffordshire of Northern England,
Circa 1810-20
This finely potted pearlware jug represents a particularly sophisticated variant of Mocha ware, distinguished by its complex, multi-tiered decoration. The jug rises from a simple, flared white foot into a generous bulbous body, culminating in a gracefully flaring concave neck and a finely-formed spout.
The decorative scheme is meticulously planned and executed in bands of colored slip. The lower half serves as the main canvas, featuring two vibrant, rhythmic rows of the desirable "cat's eye" pattern. Each "eye" is composed of concentric drops of blue, yellow, and black slip, creating a series of jewel-like medallions that encircle the jug. This organic display is brilliantly contrasted by the formal, geometric decoration of the upper body. A central band of intricate, engine-turned rouletting, highlighted in a striking green, is flanked by two bands of cool gray slip, each neatly delineated by thin brown lines.
Dimensions: 6 inches high x 7 3/4 inches wide x 5 1/2 inch deep (15.24cm high x 19.69cm wide x 13.97cm deep).
