Chinese bronze nine dragon fengweizun, a finely formed, long necked phoenix-tail shape vase with nine highly detailed, finely carved, and variously posed dragons in high relief amid stylized clouds around the body. A border of Ru YI lappets adorns the foot. A six character, Xuande, reign mark is finely carved to the inset base. Circa Republic of China era or earlier.
nine dragons: the dragon represents good luck, strength, health and also the male element Yang. The dragon is unique because it is the only mythical creature of all the animals in the Chinese zodiac and babies are born in the year of the dragon more than any other animal. In Chinese, nine is pronounced jiu, which also means “long lasting.” As the highest single digit, it represents the maximum level of mortal happiness, longevity, and good luck.
