A large and striking Art Deco vase sculpted by Gaston Goor for the Mougin pottery works in France, this brilliantly-hued … Read more A large and striking Art Deco vase sculpted by Gaston Goor for the Mougin pottery works in France, this brilliantly-hued piece shows the production of terracotta elements for the facade of a building. Appropriately, a plum-colored Greek Revival building is shown in bas relief, flanked by several nude male figures carrying architectural pieces to and fro. Goor was famous for illustrating a number of books by Roger Peyrefitte and others in France. He was deeply influenced by the paintings he found at the Louvre in his youth, and his work often depicts male figures with an implicit, or sometimes explicit, homoerotic theme. This piece was produced by Joseph and Pierre Mougin, who were closely associated with the Ecole de Nancy. They were known for ceramic pieces that are characterized by deep incised lines and gorgeous glazes. See less
