De Bisschop is best known for his series of drawings and etchings that documented classical sculptures, making them accessible to artists across Northern Europe.
The etching comes from his influential series "Signorum veterum icones" (Images of Ancient Statues), first published in 1668. This collection of 100 prints provided aspiring Dutch artists with examples of classical Roman and Greek statuary, many of which were otherwise only viewable in Italy. The subject of this work is a Vestal Virgin, a Roman priestess of Vesta, goddess of the hearth. Vestal Virgins symbolized purity and the eternal flame of Rome, serving thirty years in chastity to maintain the sacred fire.
