Published in 1866 by Smith, … Read more Here's a rare first edition of the 19th Century British book, 'Captain Gronow's Last Recollections.' Published in 1866 by Smith, Elder & Co., London, the 200-page book is the 4th (and last) in a series on the adventures of an English bon vivant, Reese Howell Gronow. In his memoir, Gronow offers an insider view of the early 19th Century aristocratic life and military culture (including Napoleon and Waterloo).. His witty descriptions of the early-mid 1800s have been described "like drinking champagne, effervescent and mildly addictive." This is an exquisitely, gilt-decorated, quarter-leather-bound, 200-page book, in very good 159-year-old condition. The dark green leather cover has gilt-ruling, lettering and top-edging, with raised bands on the spine, and marbled endpapers, also displayed on the front cover. This is a stated 2nd edition, created posthumously, the year after Gronow's surprising death. This copy is even more beautiful than the plain brown leather First Edition. Inside, the text is clean, bright and unmarked - no signs of aging or aroma. There is only slight handling wear to the spine and the cover corners. This book was carefully stored in the leather book section of the Hollywood Faux Library Studio Props House (lightly stamped on blank page). Likely Captain Gronow would have approved!
