British Sailor's Woolwork with Port Side view of Ram-bowed Royal Navy Ship,
Circa 1880.
This 19th-century sailor's woolwork, or "woolie," presents a striking port side view of a Royal Navy ship under sail. The vessel is flanked by small sections of land to port and starboard and accurately flies a White Ensign from the stern and a long white pennant from its main mast. The work is notable for its unusual and attractive square format. It is housed in a period 19th-century deep shaped wood frame with a decorated gilt slip.
