The chair was made during the French Restoration (Restauration) period. There is an interesting explanation why low chairs were produced in the 19th century. The low-slung design of classic Victorian slipper chairs for example allowed the mother who would have been wearing a stiff corset to interact with small children without bending over. In todays interior the low armchair is preferably used in front of fireplaces or just as a comfortable lounge chair in a living room setting. The armchair has an elegant plum veneer with yew wood flower marquetry inlays. It comes expertly refinished with a new upholstery and fabric. We also offer a pair of matching low chairs from the same provenance. See less
