Unsigned, … Read more French Art Deco era early 1900s pair of art glass taper candle holders in the style of André Thuret. Unsigned, typical of the artist's early work. The well of the candle holder is lined in brass. The top side is clear polished glass. The underside features three spiked legs and hobnail style texture with inclusions of gold metal oxides.

André Thuret (1898-1965), a who studied law and science at university, began his career in chemistry with scientific experiments exploring the molecular changes in the heating and cooling of glass. These experiments led him to collaborate with French glass master Henri Navarre to execute his first glassworks in 1924. This small, unsigned piece was sprinkled with metallic inclusions, and also had intricate patterns of bubbles in the manner of Maurice Marinot, the “father” of studio glass in France. It was an important departure from the current fashion in glass design, which was more interested in uniform colors. Thuret’s use of metallic and colored inclusions and controlled bubbles would become identifying features of his glass design. See less
