Domenico parodi (genoa, 1672 – 1742)
portrait of anne marie d'orléans (château de saint-cloud, august 27, 1669 – turin, august 26, 1728), first queen consort of sardinia and maternal grandmother of louis xv of france
oval oil on canvas
75 x 58 cm - framed 88 x 72 cm.
the painting portrays a young noblewoman, identifiable as anne marie d'orléans (st. Cloud, august 27, 1669 - turin, august 26, 1728), daughter of philippe d'orléans (brother of louis xiv), who later married victor amadeus ii of savoy in 1684.
the noblewoman, depicted in half-length with a smiling expression, is richly attired in a blue dress decorated along the wide neckline with white lace, embellished with numerous jeweled details, and wrapped in an iridescent red cloak.
for iconographic comparisons, see a canvas from the royal palace, published in the catalog of the exhibition "royales effiges" in chambéry (see exhibition catalog, chambéry 1985-1986, p. 25), a full-length portrait preserved in racconigi (see noemi gabrielli, "racconigi," turin 1972, p. 202), and an oval in the galleria sabauda (in m. L. Moncassoli tibone, "ritratti per un re. Vittorio amedeo ii dalla storia all'immagine," turin 1991, p. 17).
the absence of royal attributes prevents us from determining the date, although we can assume the work was created in the early decades of the 18th century.
given its stylistic characteristics, we believe the painting is attributable to domenico parodi, one of the finest italian portrait painters between the late 17th and the first half of the 18th century. As is evident from our portrait, his art followed the most common french models, fitting perfectly into the "french" portrait genre, pioneered by hyacinthe rigaud in the early 18th century and known through numerous copies and engravings.
it should be remembered that the intense cultural exchange between france and italy led the italian nobility to cultivate a profound admiration for the pictorial style imported from france, especially between the first and second decades of the 18th century, which became an essential model for artists such as parodi.
