Extremely rare, high quality and historically significant stoneware grain jar from the Song Dynasty (960-1279). This Cizhou large stoneware jar with rat application is recognized as a very important piece of Chinese pottery. The body is hard fired in grayish white stoneware with a characteristic brilliant dark brown glaze with some fine grazing. Infrequent decoration of molded rodents symbolizes good luck and plenty. If the rat motif is part of a rare and particularly well executed decorative design, the importance increases significantly. The existence of such a piece with unique design and complex artistry is consistent with known Cizhou traditions. The large in scale jar is very special as it is not commonly found.

Provenance and authentication from the collection of Mr. Richard Ravenel, former
Owner of Asian Gallery in New York City, East 77th Street, Manhattan.
Mr. Ravenel was a prominent Asian Art Dealer who sold items to major museums
and important private collections.
