A superb antique Yixing teapot crafted from rich zisha (purple-sand clay), dating circa 1920–30s. The rounded body is beautifully decorated with applied plum blossom branches. The spout and handle are sculpted as naturalistic tree branches, and the lid is topped with a gnarled branch finial. This naturalistic style is highly prized among Yixing collectors for its artistry and symbolism. The base bears an impressed seal mark, with a second impressed stamp inside the lid, confirming its Yixing origin. A fine and collectible Chinese Yixing teapot, showcasing the artistry of purple-sand clay in its most naturalistic form and ready to enhance your collection or your décor.
COLLECTOR'S NOTES
The plum blossom motif is one of the “Four Gentlemen” in Chinese art, admired for blooming in the harshness of winter. On Yixing teapots, these motifs were not just decorative but symbolic — representing endurance, renewal, and moral integrity. Republic-period Yixing potters often returned to these naturalistic forms, blending sculpture and utility to create pieces treasured by scholars and collectors alike. The square seal script, four characters, reads: Zhongguo Yixing / Made in Yixing, China. Characters inside lid translations: “Purple Sand (Yixing clay)” + artisan’s signature.
