moreThis is a 1930s mirror that hung in the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City when it first opened in 1931. It is a beautiful mirror and the patina that the frame has acquired over the years gives it a warm feel. The gilding detail has also mellowed.
The mirror retains the original 1931 metal plaque on the reverse as shown in the photo.
During one of the renovations in the 1990s, a treasure trove of items long forgotten was found including photographs, menus, and even a bell hop costume. The old photo in this listing shows a mirror exactly like the one we have here and who knows, it could be this very one! You can read the full article at Atlas Obscura.
Can you imagine how many people have giving themselves one more glance over before heading to dinner at one of the famous restaurants or gone to a fabulous ball and schmoozing with other well todo and famous people for over 90 years?
This mirror is a nice size and certainly is not something you can just pop a nail up and hang it. It will definitely need a little extra support to make sure it does not drop.
The Waldorf Astoria opened it doors in 1931. Since then every living president has stayed in this hotel. Rock stars, movie stars, royalty, and everyone else in the jet set lifestyle has stayed within those famous walls. When the hotel was originally built, it was the tallest hotel in the world and boasted 1417 rooms. The largest suite in the hotel was lived in by Cole Porter. Once Cole Porter passed away Nancy and Frank Sinatra lived there. None other than The Who was banned for life for their ruckus behaviour, but was reinstated once the Waldorf was hosting the Rock N Roll hall of fame induction ceremony and The Who was being inducted. Talk about a thumbing of the nose!
* The Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York is closed now and under new ownership. Once these items sell we cannot get more as there are none, so this is a chance to own a special piece from a special place.

Cancellations
- Prior to shipping or local pickup, buyers may cancel an order for any reason, with the exception of Made-to-Order items, where supplies have been purchased or work begun on the item.
- Please notify us within 24 hours of purchase if you would like to cancel an order, as prompt cancellation will reduce the likelihood that you will incur return shipping charges.
- Once shipping or pickup has been initiated, the cancellation will be considered a return and you will be responsible for the cost of shipping.
