1930s Pair of Pirate Bookends crafted by the JB Hirsch Foundry Company. These are hard to find Art Deco “Sabers & Swords” Soldier or Pirate Figures that stand 7 3/4 “H and weigh approximately. 3 pounds each. The pirate figurines are an interesting mix of bronzed metal with crimson and green highlights, and celluloid plastic, called Ivorine, for the face and knee pieces. They are on a heavy white stone base, usually made of alabaster or onyx, that measures 5″ x 3 1/4”.
Hirsch created these pieces during the Art Deco era as a tribute to the ivory and bronze figures emerging from France. Constructed from spelter, or French bronze, a combination of zinc and various other metals. The surface is then painted with cold paint to simulate the appearance of bronze.
