There are many later renditions of the Japanese sleeping cat figures, however, this piece is an exceptional and an exquisite … Read more There are many later renditions of the Japanese sleeping cat figures, however, this piece is an exceptional and an exquisite example from the Meiji period, entirely decorated in gold with very fine brush strokes of fur detail on crackle overglaze, and with a beautiful enamel painted bow on the neck. Further, the emphasis on the endearing facial expression of the cat is a striking and an irresistible feature, accented again with gold brush strokes below the eyes.

Made of fine craftsmanship with attention to detail both in shape and design, the enchanting portrayal was most likely inspired by the legendary 17th century carving of the sleeping cat - 'Nemuri Neko' at Nikko Toshogu Shrine in Japan.

This wonderful piece has a presence that conveys an ambience of peace and a calmness.
