Pieter casteels iii (antwerp 1684 – richmond 1749)
floral still life
signed lower left, on the stone: p casteels
circa 1730
oil on canvas
57 x 103 cm, framed 67 x 112 cm
the painting is accompanied by an expert opinion by professor ferdinando arisi
the painting is accompanied by a critical study by ferdinando arisi, who attributes its authorship to the antwerp master pieter casteels iii (antwerp 1684 – richmond 1749), an attribution supported by the signature on the stone at the bottom left.
the work, which follows a horizontal layout, depicts rich floral compositions arranged in a studied random manner on the architectural fragments of a garden.
the still life beautifully demonstrates the painter's expressive qualities, capable of creating a sequence of similar compositions without falling into the banality of illustrative replication, demonstrating a descriptive sensibility of remarkable visual impact and refinement.
as specified in the expert opinion, the still life was painted around 1730, following a taste that evolved from the style of gaspar peter verbruggen toward forms typical not only of the netherlands, but that can easily be defined as european. In italy, for example, painters active in the roman-neapolitan milieu such as gasparo lopez, francesco lavagna, and nicola malinconico expressed themselves in a similar manner.
among the paintings that can be compared are the two still lifes with flowers on sculpted basins, one signed and dated 1729, sold at christie's, london, on november 6, 1964.
the work is presented in excellent condition, completed by an antique gilded and lacquered wooden frame.
