A very endearing and engaging canine composition of a King Charles Spaniel, painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

The dog stands in a profile pose on a simple green hillside, with a muted grey sky and soft white clouds drifting overhead. Its long, silky coat is rendered in warm brown and creamy white, with carefully painted details in the fur that give it texture and character.

The spaniel wears a red collar with a gold buckle, adding a touch of brightness and personality to the composition. The dog’s wide, round eyes and symmetrical face create an endearing, almost human-like expression—both attentive and gentle.

This oil on board is housed in a dark brown frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
