At Bay: Bear and Hounds in Combat
English School, 19th Century – In the Manner of Richard Ansdell (1815–1885)
Subject & Medium
This striking 19th-century English School oil on panel captures a rare and violent spectacle: a desperate bear, cornered and fighting for survival, beset by a pack of hounds.
Unlike the more common fox or stag hunts, this choice of subject—a bear fight—is highly unusual in British art, recalling Flemish masters such as Paul de Vos and Abraham Hondius. The composition mirrors Victorian Britain’s appetite for natural history, the exotic, and the theatre of survival.
Composition & Technique
The scene brims with compressed energy. The bear rises like a dark pillar at the centre, defiant, while hounds circle in a frenzy of diagonals—leaping, biting, and straining.
Palette: Earthy browns and ochres dominate, punctuated by bright whites that animate the hounds. Subdued greens and greys in the background heighten the drama.
Brushwork: Quick, vigorous strokes suggest motion and fur, with denser layers lending weight to the bear. The softly blended sky contrasts with the tension below.
Style: Anatomical precision combines with Baroque theatricality, hallmarks of Richard Ansdell’s influence.
Though modest in size, the panel carries the power of a monumental canvas, intended for intimate cabinet display.
Artist & Influence
Anonymous in hand yet unmistakably painted in the manner of Richard Ansdell (1815–1885), one of Victorian Britain’s foremost animal and sporting painters.
Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1840.
Elected full Academician in 1870—rare for an animal painter.
Rival to Sir Edwin Landseer, but where Landseer leaned sentimental, Ansdell exalted in vitality and combat.
This work demonstrates how Ansdell’s muscular style shaped the English School, inspiring provincial artists and satisfying collectors’ taste for animalier drama.
