Spectacular decorative centerpiece created in the iconic Vallauris ceramics center during the 1960s, crafted by Marius Musarra for Mabyjo's. The design features a fat-lava glaze in black and white tones, whose crystalline, fragmented texture evokes solidified magma. The surface of the piece imitates that of cooled lava, which has transformed into porous and irregular volcanic rock. The flank features a curved edge covered in vibrant red glaze, while the peaked finials reinforce the sense of contained energy. Its asymmetrical shape and natural finish enhance its sculptural presence, making the piece suitable both as a functional object and as a decorative sculpture.
About Vallauris
Vallauris was a pottery center that experienced significant growth in the mid-19th century thanks to the arrival of the railroad. It eventually established itself as a ceramic center with the arrival of Post-Impressionist and modern painters, such as Chagall and Picasso, who looked to the East and the primitive for inspiration. At this time, large factories emerged, and with them, a truly industrial and commercial organization in ceramic production. Vallauris pottery is of the highest quality in both materials and design.
About Marius Musarra and Mabyjo's Workshop
A native of Sicily (1910), Musarra trained with his potter father and also developed his craft in Tunisia. In 1926, he moved to Vallauris, where he contributed to the creative revival of local ceramics, collaborating with his father-in-law, Sauveur Lunetta, and eventually founding his studio, Mabyjo's. His work was notable for combining traditional artisan methods with an expressive, modern aesthetic, earning him multiple awards at the most prestigious contemporary ceramics biennials.
