This superb walnut sloping desk, from a château in Burgundy, is a remarkable example of the refinement of 18th-century French cabinetmaking. Combining elegance, symbolism, and ingenuity, it perfectly illustrates the aristocratic and intellectual spirit of the Enlightenment.
Crafted in solid walnut, it retains a beautiful, warm patina.
Adorned with allegorical marquetry:
On the drop-leaf: a crossed bow and quiver of arrows, symbols borrowed from Cupid and Diana, evoking love, seduction, the hunt, and victory.
On the central drawer: a five-pointed star, a symbol of harmony, guidance, and perfection, reflecting the ideals of the Enlightenment.
