This still life by Austrian-American painter Albin Kern (b. 1884, d. 1975) depicts a seasonal spread of gourds, fruits, and flowers. The components of this still life are beautifully rendered with strong attention to light and detail. Throughout the piece there are hidden creatures, such as a mouse in the bottom left corner, a butterfly perched on top of the flowers, and the shapes of small birds along the top center. The airy light background of the piece combined with these details creates a sense of whimsy in an otherwise traditional motif.

Albin Kern was born in Austria in 1884 and studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. During his education he was drafted into the German army for WWI. He was captured during the conflict and subsequently spent five years living in Russian prison camps. In 1919 he escaped Russia to China and from there was able to relocate to California. He settled in Millbrae and continued to paint, working as a house and set painter at times to support himself. He is best known for his natural landscape paintings. See less
