This is a stunning Large Original Mixed Media Painting on Paper by Listed California Artist, Hendrik Grise (1914-1982). Grise was a prolific artist who was part of many of the major art movements of the mid-20th Century. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Dallas Museum School of Art before coming to Southern California in the late 1940s, where he consistently exhibited his work. He was friends with several artists from the New York School, including Mark Tobey who was close to Jackson Pollock. The influences of his time are clear in his bright, fluid works.
This is one of the standouts in the collection. Bold sweeping cobalt blue forms move across a vibrant field of layered reds, pinks, yellows, lavender, black, and white, creating a dynamic composition that balances energetic gestural brushwork with a strong underlying structure. The richly layered surface and saturated palette are characteristic of Grise's mature abstract style and create exceptional visual impact. It is not dated but looks to have been done around 1970. Sold unframed. Will ship boxed to preserve integrity.
Provenance and Certification: We bought the bulk of Hendrick Grise's estate in 2015 and are beginning to market his works and introduce him more broadly to the public. The majority of the works in our collection have never been offered for sale. We have some of the BEST works by Grise that you will ever find. Each piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Condition: Good vintage condition overall. There is light tanning in the upper right corner and one very small tear (approximately 1/2") along the right edge that would likely be concealed when framed. The painting otherwise presents beautifully with bright, vibrant color. Please review all photos.
Measurements: Painting is approx 40"x26"
