This is a stunning Large Original Mixed Media Painting on Paper by Listed California Artist, Hendrik Grise (1914-1982). Grise was a prolific artist who was part of many of the major art movements of the mid-20th Century. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Dallas Museum School of Art before coming to Southern California in the late 1940s, where he consistently exhibited his work. He was friends with several artists from the New York School, including Mark Tobey who was close to Jackson Pollock. The influences of his time are clear in his bright, fluid works.
This piece is one of my favorites in the collection. The striking composition features an explosive central arrangement of gestural brushwork, splatters, and sweeping calligraphic forms in vivid cobalt blue, crimson, yellow, orange, black, and white. The layered surface and dynamic movement create an energetic composition with exceptional visual impact, while Grise's signature use of color and spontaneous mark-making is evident throughout. It is not dated but looks to have been done around 1970. Sold unframed. Will ship boxed to preserve integrity.
Provenance and Certification: We bought the bulk of Hendrick Grise's estate in 2015 and are beginning to market his works and introduce him more broadly to the public. The majority of the works in our collection have never been offered for sale. We have some of the BEST works by Grise that you will ever find. Each piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Condition: Very good vintage condition overall. There are three small areas of paint loss, each roughly pea-sized, visible upon close inspection. The work displays beautifully and retains strong color and presence. Please review all photos.
Measurements: Painting is approx 40"x26"
