This hand-colored print is from "Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna" (Ancient and Modern Sweden), a comprehensive work that offers a grand depiction of Swedish grandeur during its period as a world power. The image showcases the castle with its distinctive architecture and beautifully laid out gardens, reflecting the romantic and almost fairytale-like quality that characterizes many of the works in this collection. Erik Dahlberg, the mastermind behind the collection, was an accomplished engineer, soldier, and author. His contribution to military architecture and his service as director-general of fortifications in Sweden gave him a profound understanding of buildings and their strategic importance, which is reflected in the detailed nature of the engravings in "Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna." The engraving was created by Willem Swidde, a Dutch artist, in 1690.
