He was one of the most important military leaders of the napoleonic wars, earning the nickname “marschall vorwärts” (marshal forward) for his bold and aggressive tactics. The print shows blücher seated in uniform, adorned with decorations and military orders, with his sword at his side and bicorne hat resting on a table. His upright pose and firm profile emphasize his determined character and military authority. The engraving is full of delicate detail, particularly in the embroidered cuffs, braid, and decorations, conveying the grandeur of a high-ranking commander. The work is inscribed: “g.l. Von blucher, field marshal of the prussian forces, from an original drawing by her royal highness princess wilhelmina of prussia.” it was published in london on march 10, 1814, at rudolph ackermann’s repository of arts, 101 strand, one of the most important publishing houses of the early 19th century. The printmaker is identified as h. Meyer fecit, indicating heinrich meyer, a skilled engraver active during this period. The unusual fact that the portrait is after a drawing by princess wilhelmina of prussia underlines both blücher’s stature and the prestige of the work. Such portraits were issued at a time when public interest in napoleonic wars heroes was at its height, and they were collected by admirers across europe as symbols of patriotic triumph. This engraving is not only a portrait of a major military figure but also an artifact of the political and cultural moment when britain and prussia celebrated their alliance against napoleon. Condition summary: very good impression with fine, clear lines. Paper generally clean with only minor toning and light creases in the margins. A small fold or handling crease visible at the corner, but no significant damage. Strong plate mark present. Framing tips: a gilt frame will highlight the martial grandeur and period character of the print. Alternatively, a simple black or ebonized frame with a cream or ivory mount will create a striking, formal presentation suitable for display in a study, library, or historical collection.
