Silver plate finish … Read more Vintage pair of diminutive silver plate "Silver Onion" candle holders by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk, circa 1960s. Silver plate finish over metal, supporting thin 0.25"dia tapered candles. The base of the holder features a unique design with a slight tilt incorporated, allowing you to display either vertically or at an angle. Very heavy for their size. Made in France.

The base is angled and counterbalanced allowing the candleholder to stand erect on its flat base, or to tip at a 15-degree angle if one wishes to create a conversation piece as Quistgaard intentionally added the twist "by allowing the heavy holder to be tilted... With its concise, organic form, the candleholder represents [sic:] his ideal of simplification without impoverishment and is an example of sublime interaction of form and function." [from Stig Guldberg's Jens Quistgaard: The Sculpting Designer, Phaidon, 2022]. The design of the form was influenced by the Japanese "Kawaii" (meaning "cute") aesthetic that goes back hundreds of years to the Edo Period, and as a sculptor, Quistgaard designed small objects that included paperweights and candle holders, such as these.
