Dramatic Victorian Marine Oil Painting – “Dundee Steam Whaler in Distress, Rescued by RNLI Lifeboat” – William Broome, c.1890
Subject & Medium
A powerful late 19th-century oil on canvas by the British marine painter William Broome (1838–1892). The painting captures a dramatic maritime rescue: a steam-assisted whaling vessel, floundering in storm seas off Dundee, as it is saved by the heroic crew of the RNLI lifeboat James Sturm.
This work exemplifies Victorian maritime art at its most dramatic—where the sea is depicted as both majestic and merciless, and human bravery stands as its counterpoint. Painted in oil, Broome layers atmosphere and detail with precision, giving the viewer not only a scene but an experience of the storm.
Composition & Technique
At the centre of the composition, the distressed steamer tilts stern-first into surging seas. Its central mast lies broken, rigging lashes in the gale, and the crew huddle on deck casting lines to the oncoming lifeboat. Smoke trails faintly from the funnel, evidence of an engine room overcome by flooding.
The lifeboat James Sturm is painted with clarity and vigor, its crew leaning forward into the spray as they attempt to seize the ropes and bring the sailors to safety. Around them, seagulls skim the waves, a barrel drifts on the swells, and above, a fractured sky breaks with streaks of light.
Broome demonstrates mastery in his handling of the sea—short, energetic strokes capture the foam and surge, while broader, smoother passages define the rolling masses of water. His palette of sea greens, storm blues, and gunmetal greys captures both atmosphere and tension. This is among Broome’s most accomplished works, balancing technical realism with dramatic narrative.
About the Ship
The vessel is a three-masted steel-hulled screw steamer built in Dundee by Gourlay Brothers & Co. for the Dundee, Perth & London Shipping Company, a firm central to Scotland’s 19th-century whaling and sealing industries.
The lifeboat depicted is the RNLI Buckie Lifeboat James Sturm, a 33-foot self-righting craft stationed at Buckie, Moray between 1871 and 1889. Its crews embodied courage, often venturing into lethal conditions to save lives at sea.

About the Artist
William Broome (1838–1892) was a specialist British marine artist based in Ramsgate, Kent. Known for his accurate yet atmospheric renderings of the sea, he painted directly from life, with a keen understanding of tides, weather, and coastal conditions. His preferred subjects were storm-lashed vessels, lifeboat rescues, and shipwrecks, painted in the realist tradition.
This work stands as one of his finest—showcasing his ability to balance accuracy with drama, and to convey not just the look of the sea, but the peril and courage it inspired. His paintings have been exhibited and sold internationally and remain sought after by collectors of Victorian maritime art.
