The design is a modern revival of a classical form, inspired by the ancient Roman sella curulis (curule seat).

The X-shaped frame and gracefully curved legs are a direct nod to the ancient Roman curule seat and have an ebonized, lacquered finish, accented with gilded details on the arms and central stretcher. It stands on four lion paw feet, a motif used to symbolize power and status in ancient Roman art.
