These vases were traditionally used for ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement and date back to the 16th century.
The Meiji period (1860-1912) is known for their mixed metal decorations and intricate designs. This particular usubata is made of heavy bronze and features a thick, cast design, as seen in the relief carvings on the body of the vase depicting a landscape scene on both sides. Additionally there are fish-shaped handles and a tripod base featuring the faces of dragons.
