Fellerman Studios refers to the studio glass works of American artist Stephen Fellerman (b. 1951), often in collaboration with his … Read more Fellerman Studios refers to the studio glass works of American artist Stephen Fellerman (b. 1951), often in collaboration with his wife Claire (“Clair”) Raabe. Fellerman grew up in New York and studied ceramics at Pratt Institute, then traveled to California (1972), where he learned glassblowing. He returned to Connecticut in 1973 and opened a studio in Kent (soon moving to nearby Westport), becoming “one of the first studio glass artists to make a living” from glassblowing. Over the 1970s–’90s he produced hand-blown decorative vases, bowls, and objects. Fellerman’s work was heavily Art Nouveau–inspired, featuring floral and organic motifs. In the 1990s, he often signed pieces simply “Fellerman Studios” (sometimes with Claire Raabe’s initials), whereas earlier works might be marked “Fellerman” with a date.
Fellerman’s signature style is hand-blown art glass with richly-colored, iridescent surfaces. His vases often use stanniferous glass (“aurene”/iridized) techniques to create a lustrous metallic sheen.
In general, Fellerman pieces are “one-of-a-kind” art glass that “masters of their crafts” would produce, and surviving works are expected to appreciate as they become scarce.
