Just in time for the holidays is this Covered Bridge 7" Redware Plate dated March 20th, 1985.
The back inscribed," Berringer Pottery, Pleasantville PA., Oley Township, Berks County 1852, 1856."
The plate is 7" in diameter with light Crazing. There are no chips or damage.
The glaze on this plate is in the "Sgraffito" ceramic decoration technique; layers of contrasting colored slip or under glaze are applied to a leather hard pottery piece then parts of the layers are scratched or carved away to reveal the contrasting color of the underlying slip or the clay body itself the word sagarthro comes from the Italian word “Sgraffiito”, meaning “to scratch”.
This Redware Pottery plate is a beautiful example of the technique employed by Lester Berringer who was known for creating 18th Century Styled Pennsylvania pottery and operating his pottery facility from 1965 to 2001.
