MacKenzie-Childs was founded by artists Victoria and Richard MacKenzie-Childs in 1983 in Aurora, New York, as a small pottery business that specialized in whimsical, artisan-crafted ceramics and furnishings, creating their iconic Courtly Check pattern. After facing financial difficulties, including a bankruptcy in 2000, the company was purchased by Pleasant Rowland in 2001 and continued to grow, expanding its line of products to include furniture, home decor, and other handcrafted items.
