Tramp Art Box with "W.S." Initials
United States, early 20th century | 11" L x 7 3/8" D x 5 1/4" H
This well-preserved tramp art box is a strong example of early 20th-century American folk craftsmanship. Built from layered and chip-carved wood—likely salvaged from cigar boxes, as suggested by a stamped label on the underside—it reflects the practical ingenuity and decorative style associated with the tradition.
The box is structurally sound, with no missing elements, and retains its original varnish, which shows light bubbling on the front surface due to age. The carving is clean and carefully executed, with a balanced, symmetrical design.
An inverted triangle frames the keyhole on the front panel, creating a focal point that unifies the box’s overall geometry. Just below this, the initials W.S. appear, thinly and slightly irregularly carved—perhaps identifying the maker, recipient, or owner.
Condition: In good condition. No losses, all elements intact, original surface. There are scuffs and scratches consistent with age.
Materials: Carved and layered wood from repurposed cigar boxes.
Provenance: Unknown maker; United States, ca. early 20th century.
