Each Bell has a beautiful patina, with typical tarnish but has not been cleaned, polished or changed by Clover's Cottage.
Over history such bells and related ornamentation, were a great way to show off a person's wealth and status.
They were also, a good early warning system to pedestrians and other folk on the road, that a horse or horse drawn vehicle was heading their way. In the early 1800's American and European manufacturers developed a process to stamp or cast bells out of Brass, which greatly expediting the production process.

Obviously, horse drawn transportation faded with the advent of the automobile and so did bell makers. This set was likely used in North Carolina where they were acquired.

These are round shaped bells, ("Crotals") sometimes called "Arctic" or " Globe" Bells, with an internal pellet that allows the Crotal to vibrate as the pellet rolls around and makes the Brass vibrate to create a distinct sound. We think that you will agree that this strap produces a sound stunningly "Christmas like, with a soft gentle chime. The design allows them to vibrate, and we hope, will bring Christmas joy and cheer to your home.
The dimensions are as follows:
Leather strap: 8".
2 Inner Bells: 2.5". (with 6 "slits or throats").
2 Outer Bells: 4". (with 4 "slits or throats").

The number of "throats" was a way for manufactures to add distinction to their bells.
