A rare complete Elsmore & Forster English ironstone soup tureen, Staffordshire c.1855–1870, with its original domed lid, ladle, and matching … Read more A rare complete Elsmore & Forster English ironstone soup tureen, Staffordshire c.1855–1870, with its original domed lid, ladle, and matching underplate - it is highly unusual to see a complete set of mid-Victorian ironstone survive in tact today.
An outstanding mid 19th century set, the underplate bears the impressed mark “Improved Opaque China E & F.” The tureen is finely modeled with leaf-molded side handles, a tulip-bud finial, and a generously sized oval underplate with scrollwork at the ends. the ladle's handle has complementary detail. The white glaze highlights the elegant relief work and exemplifies the quality of Staffordshire ironstone at its height.
Large tureens of this period rarely survive complete with all their components intact — the presence of the matching underplate and original ladle make this an especially rare and collector-worthy set.
This impressive tureen is equally at home as a showpiece in an English country dining room, as a statement centerpiece for entertaining, or as a prized addition to a serious ironstone collection.
