Antique Ice Chest sold by Belknap Hardware circa 1919. Made quartersawn oak with a stout rectangular frame featuring four doors, original brass hardware and paneled sides. Interior has been retrofitted for use as a storage cabinet with green felt lined shelves that are removable. Includes antique cast iron ice block tongs.
Belknap Hardware was a major, family-owned hardware distributor in Louisville, Kentucky, founded in 1840 by William Burke Belknap, that operated for over 140 years before going bankrupt in 1986. Known for its "Bluegrass" tools and extensive 3,000-page catalog offering thousands of products from lamps to fish hooks, the company was a national leader in the hardware industry and a major wholesale competitor of retail companies like Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward.
