Pair of vintage/antique cloisonne' vases. While not an exact match, they compliment each other nicely.
Cloisonné, in the decorative arts, is an enameling technique or any product of that technique, which consists of soldering to a metal surface delicate metal strips bent to the outline of a design and filling the resulting cellular spaces, called cloisons (French: “partitions” or “compartments”), with vitreous enamel paste. The object then is fired, ground smooth, and polished. Sometimes metal wire is used in place of the usual gold, brass, silver, or copper strips.
If a cloisonne was made for export from 1897 to 1921, it will have 'China', in various spellings, on the base. For pieces made after 1921, look for the inscription 'Made in China'. An imperial seal may indicate the piece was produced earlier than 1897, but there was a revival of empire marks after the beginning of the Chinese Republic in 1912. One of the vases is marked China and the other Made In China.
