We recently purchased the pristine catalog, Huit Modeles de PIERRE BALMAN, published in Paris in 1946. This design is one of a grouping of 8 couture fashion designs of Balmain’s modern 1946 summer collection. The limited circulation catalog had a commentary by Alice B. Toklas, the American-born member of the Paris avant-garde in the early 20th century and the life partner of Gertrude Stein. The croquis (fashion designs) were illustrated by the leading fashion illustrator, René Gruau, whose work is highly collectible and recognizable with its strong graphic, stylized line drawing. Pierre Balmain was inspired by the silhouette, grace, beauty, and sophistication of the early 20th century fashion designers. His mid-century creations celebrated and embellished the form and charm of the post-WWII woman. His dresses were symbols of feminism and grace and he used the finest of silks and wools. He played with the juxtaposition of fabric and draping, the variety of line and the importance of decoration and fashion accoutrements. He brought back the embellishments of pom-poms, feathers, embroidery, sequins, lace, flowers. Each design was created with a “purpose,” a function for the sophisticated chic woman. This design was created for “The opening of the Salon”. Pristine condition. High quality thick stock paper. 8.75 x 11.75 inches. Comes in a neutral tone 16 x 20 custom mat ready for a standard size frame. Please allow time for custom matting.B See less
