An exceptional matched pair of late Victorian horse-head gatepost finials, embodying the 19th-century fascination with equestrian imagery as a symbol of nobility, vigilance, and strength. Cast in iron and retaining remnants of their original black painted finish, these sculptural cappings were designed not only for practical use atop estate gateposts but also as striking emblems of refinement and status.

Composition & Technique ⚒️
Modelled with naturalistic precision, each horse bust conveys vitality through finely articulated musculature, attentive ears, and a noble expression. Weighing over 8.5 kg apiece, they reflect the robust technical standards and artistic sensibilities associated with the Glasgow School of design. Their patinated surfaces—with traces of original paint, historic wear, and weathered texture—lend authenticity and depth.
The design avoids portraiture of a specific breed, instead celebrating the idealised equestrian type revered in Victorian art and architecture. With arched necks and dignified bearing, the figures recall the classic stallion as an enduring emblem of speed, virility, and guardianship—while the foundry’s black finish harmonised with contemporary architectural ironwork.
