Featuring traditional Chinese symbols of cranes, a very auspicious bird in both Japanese and Chinese culture, and bonsai trees rendered in a dark, reddish-brown intricately carved glass overlay. This antique snuff bottle would make a nice addition to any collection. Made of Peking glass which originated in 18th century China during the rule of the Qing Dynasty. The introduction of European technologies by Jesuit missionaries to Asia in the 17th century caused a shift in the styles of Chinese glass makers and eventually led the Kangxi Emperor to establish an Imperial glass-works in 1696. Peking glass is an overlay carved glass created by layering material around a core. To create the overlay, a glass blower makes the shape, then dips the shape into a basin of liquid glass, often of a contrasting color, several times. This process creates multiple layers of glass that are then carved away to produce a unique textured image.
