A striking handwoven Kuba cloth runner from the Democratic Republic of Congo, dating to the mid-20th century (circa 1940s–1970s).
Woven from raffia palm fibers and decorated in appliqué with bold interlocking geometric motifs in black, rust, and tan with deep plum trim, this textile embodies the artistry of the Kuba people.
Traditionally, Kuba cloths were created for ceremonial and social use, worn as skirts, used as tribute cloths, and displayed in royal courts.
Each design holds cultural symbolism, with maze-like patterns representing lineage, community, or proverbial wisdom.
